Wyatt Decker, MD, MBA, joined Optum in 2019. In his role as Chief Executive Officer of Optum Health, Dr. Decker oversees the care delivery and ambulatory care capabilities of Optum Care, as well as major platforms serving Behavioral Health, Population Health, Complex Care, and consumer offerings at Optum. He is leveraging the full value of Optum’s distinctive assets in data, analytics, technology, and clinical expertise to improve the health outcomes and experiences for the millions of people receiving care in local care systems and everywhere Optum serves consumers and patients.
Prior to joining Optum, Dr. Decker served for more than two decades at Mayo Clinic, one of the largest not-for-profit, academic health systems in the U.S. He most recently held the dual role of Chief Medical Information Officer for Mayo Clinic, and CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona. At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Decker pioneered the use of innovative digital technologies, including telemedicine and AI, to deliver health care expertise to affiliated care providers nationwide, as well as leading the digital strategy around engaging and empowering patients.
Under his leadership, Mayo Clinic in Arizona was named the number-one safest teaching hospital in the U.S., the number-one hospital in Arizona by U.S. News and World Report, and achieved the highest possible CMS ratings for both patient quality and patient experience. He oversaw the launch of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine’s Arizona campus and the building of an advanced, National Cancer Institute–designated Cancer Center.
Dr. Decker also has served as a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, and directed the Emergency Medicine Residency Training program at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Decker holds an MD from Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Science from University of California, Santa Cruz.
Dr. Karen DeSalvo is an internist and health leader working at the intersection of medicine, public health, and information technology. She has dedicated her career to improving health outcomes for all with a focus on solutions that address all the determinants of health. Dr. DeSalvo continues to be a powerful voice and advocate for eliminating inequities and improving the public’s health.
She brings this lifelong commitment to her role as Chief Health Officer at Google, where her team of health professionals provide guidance for the development of Google’s research, products, and services, including those for Google’s own employees and their family members. Prior to Google, Dr. DeSalvo was Vice Dean for Community Affairs and Health Policy at Tulane School of Medicine and Chief of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. She served as Health Commissioner in post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans, then as the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and Assistant Secretary for Health (Acting) in the Obama Administration.
Dr. DeSalvo is on the Board of Directors for Welltower and the Council of the National Academy of Medicine. She co-convenes the National Alliance for the Social Determinants of Health (NASDOH) with former HHS Secretary Michael O. Leavitt and is a member of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation National Commission to Transform Public Health Data Systems. Dr. DeSalvo previously served on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and the Humana Board of Directors. She served as President of the Society of General Internal Medicine and Honorary Vice President, United States, for the American Public Health Association. In 2021, Dr. DeSalvo was named to Business Insider’s list of 100 People Transforming Business and has repeatedly been included on the list of Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. She earned her MD and MPH from Tulane University, and a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Thomas Lee is Chief Medical Officer of Press Ganey, and an internist and cardiologist who practices at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He is a Professor of Medicine, part time, at Harvard Medical School and Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health. Prior to joining Press Ganey, he served as Network President for Partners Healthcare System and Chief Executive Officer for Partners Community HealthCare, Inc., the integrated delivery system founded by Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of Geisinger Health System, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Geisinger Health Plan, Geisinger Quality Options, Inc., and Geisinger Indemnity Insurance Company Board of Directors. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Health Leads; the Board of Overseers of Weill Cornell Medical College; the Special Medical Advisory Group (SMAG) of the Veterans Administration; and the Panel of Health Advisors of the Congressional Budget Office. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the New England Journal of Medicine, as well as Editor-in-Chief of NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery and Co-Chair of the NEJM Catalyst Editorial Board.
He is the author of more than 260 academic articles and three books, Chaos and Organization in Health Care, Eugene Braunwald and the Rise of Modern Medicine, and An Epidemic of Empathy in HealthcarNamed in his honor, the Thomas H. Lee Award for Excellence in Primary Care is given each year to recognize a primary care physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who meets the needs of his or her patients exceptionally well.
Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in History and Science from Harvard College, a medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, and a master’s degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. He lives in Milton, Massachusetts, with his wife, Dr. Soheyla Gharib, who is Chief of Medicine at Harvard University Health Services. The couple has three daughters.
Dan Liljenquist is the Chief Strategy Officer for Intermountain Health, where he is responsible for establishing the organization’s strategic priorities. Dan oversees Intermountain’s Strategy, coordinating seven sections of the company. Through his collaborative leadership, Intermountain is a leading partner in value-based care, health care innovation, and consumer experience.
In 2022 and 2021, he was recognized by Modern Healthcare as one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.” Also in 2021, Dan was listed as one of the “Top 25 Innovators in Healthcare” and featured in “The Collaborative: 45 healthcare leaders who exemplify collaboration created in service to the patient.”
Dan is the chief architect and current Board Chair of Civica Rx, an initiative launched in 2018 to create a not-for-profit generic drug company to ensure that essential generic medications are available and affordable to everyone. After growing to include 55 health systems as members of Civica Rx and producing and distributing approximately 60 medications, the company began CivicaScript. This led to the 2022 announcement that Civica would begin producing and distributing affordable insulin in 2024.
He is the lead author of “Addressing Generic-Drug Market Failures — the Case for Establishing a Nonprofit Manufacturer,” published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2018. In 2021, he also helped launch and currently serves as Board Chair of Graphite Health, a member-led, nonprofit company intent on making facilitating the rapid adoption of digital health solutions.
Dan and his wife, Brooke, are the parents of six children and reside in Bountiful, Utah.
As Editorial Director for NEJM Catalyst, Edward Prewitt oversees all editorial content for the monthly journal, NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery; monthly Insights reports; and quarterly events. He works closely with NEJM Catalyst advisors, authors, and colleagues to ensure that editorial content advances the national and international dialogue to drive innovation in health care delivery, while upholding NEJM Group’s high standards for quality.
Rasu B. Shrestha, MD, MBA, is Enterprise Executive Vice President & Chief Strategy and Transformation Officer for Atrium Health, one of the largest non-profit and leading academic health systems in the United States. As a member of the executive leadership team, Shrestha is responsible for Atrium Health’s enterprise strategy, including planning and tactical direction for the organization’s current strategic roadmap and beyond. In addition, he spearheads a renewed focus on innovation, launching new health care inventions, discoveries, and ideas to benefit our patients and the communities Atrium Health serves. He also provides executive leadership for corporate communications and marketing, as well as enterprise data and analytics. With over 25 years of experience, Shrestha joined Atrium Health in February 2019. Prior to joining the organization, Shrestha served as Chief Innovation Officer for the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where he was responsible for driving UPMC’s innovation strategy, serving as a catalyst in transforming the payer-provider organization into a more patient-focused and economically sustainable system.
In addition to leading innovation at UPMC, Shrestha also served as Executive Vice President of UPMC Enterprises. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), as well as Academy Health, and was the Chairman of the HIMSS Innovation Committee, and Co-chair of Health Datapalooza.
Shrestha also serves on the Board of the Blumenthal Performing Arts. Among his many achievements, Shrestha was recognized as “Executive of the Year” by Healthcare Dive and was acknowledged as one of the “Top 20 Health IT Leaders Driving Change” and as a “Top Healthcare Innovator” by InformationWeek. Shrestha was the youngest student in his college in Malaysia and holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from CCS University in India. He has received training in Radiology and has held a fellowship in Informatics at the University of London. Shrestha also a holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.
Sara Vaezy is Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and Digital Officer for Providence, where she is responsible for system strategy and digital innovation for the integrated delivery network (IDN), which includes 52 hospitals and 1,085 clinics and serves over 5 million unique patients.
Sara brings deep experience to the organization in both digital and enterprise strategy development and leads system strategy, the ongoing development and evolution of Providence’s integrated strategic and financial plan, and cross-collaboration of the Providence councils as Providence continues to advance toward and design the system of the future. Sara is the architect of the Providence digital innovation model upon with the Digital Innovation Group (DIG) was founded, resulting in company partnerships and incubation of technologies that deliver value for Providence as well as other health systems.
Sara is active in the broader health care industry, serving as an NCQA Board Director, as a member of the inaugural class of the Frist Cressey Ventures Collective, a Harvard Executive Education Faculty Member, a Health Evolution Forum Fellow, World 50 Digital 50 member, a Forbes Business Council Member, and a board observer for DexCare. She has won numerous awards and has been recognized as a Business Insider 30 under 40 Transforming the Future of Healthcare (2019), Catholic Health Association Tomorrow’s Leader (2019), a Becker’s Rising Star in Health IT (2020), and a Becker’s Women to Watch in Health IT (2020 & 2022).
She holds an MHA and an MPH in Health Policy from the University of Washington School of Public Health and BAs in Physics and Philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Wagle is the Chief Medical Officer of Devoted Health, an all-in-one health care solution that provides higher-quality, more affordable, and more personalized care for older Americans. In his role as the leader of Devoted Medical, Dr. Wagle oversees a team of more than 700 clinical providers and operational staff who deliver a seamless care experience that tackles the full spectrum of social, logistical, and clinical issues.
Dr. Wagle is a faculty member at Harvard Medical School. He is a board certified internist and practiced primary care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for more than twelve years. Before he joined Devoted Health, he was the Associate Chief Quality Officer at Mass General Brigham.
Recognized as a thought leader in the primary care, quality, and population health management spaces, Dr. Wagle has advised both health systems and government organizations, and has published extensively on topics ranging from managing a provider workforce and reducing burnout to incorporating the voice and values of the patient. He is a pioneer in the use of quality measures to improve patient care, including electronic quality measures and Patient-Reported Outcome Measures. He has been invited to speak at the World Health Care Congress, the Health Analytics Summit, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and the National Quality Forum, and has been published in The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, The American Journal of Managed Care, and others. Dr. Wagle was selected for Insider's list of 30 leaders under 40 transforming healthcare in 2022.
Dr. Wagle graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University with a BA in biochemistry. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School cum laude in the Harvard/MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, where he was a Howard Hughes Fellow. He went on to finish his residency in Internal Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the Management Leadership Track and completed the Program in Clinical Effectiveness at Harvard School of Public Health. He also earned an MBA with High Distinction from Harvard Business School as a Baker Scholar.
